Masquerading and traditional wrestling are more than performances. They are living expressions of our people’s culture, strength, and discipline.
It is our identities as great servants and keepers of the world. This structures deserve to be explored, preserved, and actively sustained.
The thought of writing about them came to my mind. Reason is to make known to the ministries responsible for culture and heritage. They ought to pay closer attention.
I have come to understand that it is my calling to observe these activities. I plan to document what they represent. When you watch closely, you begin to see, what truly differentiates human beings is not just belief or tradition. It is the ability to think differently.
It is the ability to question. It is the ability to interpret. It is the ability to build meaning systems that make life easier and better.
The Unknown Complications
That idea, however, often becomes complicated when religion and tribe is constantly used to interpret every difference in thought. Truthfully, not everything passed down by our forefathers was wrong.
Many traditions were created to maintain order. They are meant to preserve identity and keep peace within communities. The problem in my view, is not the culture itself. It is how responsibility for it has been reduced to individual duty rather than structured collective development.
No Wasted Potential
We are a strong people. Physically, mentally, creatively we are strong. But strength without structure is wasted potential. To ignore this is to discredit the idea of generational continuity. The passing down of skills, discipline and purpose from one generation to the next.
There should be systems in place. These systems should be solid and intentional structures. Built for individuals to develop their abilities and refine their talents.
They should be able to help individuals take the next steps toward personal and communal growth. Culture should not be something we remember occasionally; it should be something we actively build upon.
Our people are beautiful, in strength, expression and identity. Truly this beauty deserves to be explored, refined, and put to meaningful use.
